3 idiots Vs. Five Point Someone

Now we have talked about some personal experiences, attitude, humor and a kind of book review, why don’t we also do a film review? After all, that is what my alohomora defines. Unveil all the magical doors and talk about everything.
Now on to the most hyped and happening movie-3idiots. Well, I got to watch this film on the first day itself so fortunately without much expectations I enjoyed the movie. It is one of the “Feel good” kind of movies which is for all class especially for youngsters. Now on to the most heated topics on newspapers-Five Point Someone vs. 3idiots.
I have read the book and watched the movie as well so I take the rights to speak and compare on both unbiased. FPS is about “what not to do in IIT” (as the Chetan Bhagat). It is one the bestselling books which talks on 3 IIT-ians who try to be different from the usual geeks due to which life takes a roller coaster ride. The main characters in this story are Hari Kumar (yet another ordinary guy who tries to be others), Ryan oberoi (The Brilliant rich and spoilt guy who wants to be unique in everything) and Alok (boy from poor back ground twined with family problems), Neha (Hari’s girl friend and the daughter of the HOD of dept in IIT), Viru (A strict usual IIT-iian faculty who judges students only on GPA), IIT campus (integral part of the story where all important episodes takes place).
3 idiots- Story about 3 individuals Ranchodas Shyamaldas Chanchad aka Rancho (Aamir Khan), Raju Rastogi (Sharman Joshi) and Farhan Qureishi (R Madhavan) and their vile, vindictive college director Viru Sahastrabuddhe nicknamed Virus. Now it is about 3 friends with different backgrounds who meet at one of the most prestigious college “Imperial College of Engineering”. Story travels on Farhan and Raju going in search of their missing friend the intelligent and Unique Rancho. Rancho is the one who influences his friends to take right part and suddenly disappears after college. Why? His girl friend is Pia Viru (kareena Kapoor), daughter of the HOD of IIT-ian and a Doctor. Do they get married, do the friends meet? Why does rancho leave abruptly? What happens to each of the idiot’s life post college is the story.
Now looking on the gist itself you would have noticed certain similarities between the two stories. Well, that is the problem of today. The movie was said to be adaption of the book. Though the screenplay, script travels differently one cannot deny the fact that it travel on the railway line called Five Point Someone. That was what I am going to do here. Let us list down the similarities and differences between the two and see which weighs more. At least this might be an initiative for the solution.
Similarities:
- 1. Background of the story- IIT and Imperial College of engineering.
- 2 . Both of them talks about the ridiculous and strenuous college education system and the pit falls in it.
- 3. Characters of the story- 3 stupid friends with different backgrounds. Girl friend and HOD of the Department.
- 4. Description of the story- Both of them are told in first person with Hari speaking in the book and Farhan (character similar to Hari) in the movie. Both are told in a very humorous way throughout.
- 5. Alok (Book)/Raju (Movie) family back ground. Paralyzed father, Mother making roti’s, Fat sister waiting for marriage.
- 6. Ryan/Rancho’s influence on the other two.
- 7. Alok/Raju moving away from friends for short period.
- 8. Ryan/Rancho unique different project.
- 9. Alok/Raju’s suicide when he is told about expulsion.
- 10. Ryan/Rancho cheering up Alok/raju from his trauma and bringing him to normal.
- 11. Snipping of question paper from the HOD’s room.
- 12. Approval of Ryan/Rancho’s project.
- 13. Ryan/Rancho helping Alok/Raju father in admitting to the hospital.
- 14. Neha/Pia’s brother suicide and the reason for it.
Wow... that is a decent number of similarities. Now let us see if difference outnumbers this.
Dissimilarities:
- 1. Here the girl friend is for Rancho and not for Hari. (I am sorry but that was first obvious thing I noted). (Heroes are always heroes)
- 2. Though rancho and Ryan are shown intelligent. Ryan in the book has always been the last in the class unlike Rancho who tops the university. (Heroes are always heroes only- Repeat).
- 3. Here hari(Book) does not steal the keys for taking the out the question papers instead Pia itself gives it to Rancho. In fact for reason for stealing is also different.
- 4. There is no vulgarity in the film unlike the book.
- 5. Here Farhan does not get into a job unlike Hari but moves into his field of interest.
- 6. Rancho’s success in later life.
- 7. Ryan/Rancho family back ground. Though it initially seems similar there are some obvious differences.
- 8. All is well concept.
- 9. Here Raju only stammers interviews unlike Hari.
- 10. Pia’s sister delivery scenes.
- 11. Here the three friends are not detained from a semester unlike the book.
- 12. In the movie there are no helpful soft hearted teachers unlike the book. It’s all Aamir Khan here, who else do you want??
Well that is all I could notice between the two. It’s almost a near matching number only but definitely the similarities outweighing the differences. So this means the laurels first goes to Chetan Bhagat for his original story. Whatever differences are there, the base is FPS. It is something like a Pizza. There are hundreds of Pizza’s each with different taste and ingredients but one cannot deny that the Pizza base is same for all.
So now I am forced to support Chetan Bhagat and his justifications. Whatever contract has been put earlier and changes have been made it is important that he should have got a better projection in the film. It is pathetic to see his name scrolling at the end of the film in small fonts as “Adaption from the book Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat”. Gosh, this book must have been Chetan’s life. He must have put his soul and blood and lived with this book that too being his first book. It is unfair to see his name in small fonts somewhere down after the movie is over.
Now more on to the movie. Why is this movie so much hyped?? Of course the whole movie has been like a joyous ride, hilarious right from beginning. All witty, smart spontaneous humor. But this is not a new thing for Tamil or Malayalam film industry. We have already seen such witty humor from Crazy Mohan, S.Ve Shekar or in Fazil movies. I am forced to accept that probably this kind of humor is new for Hindi audience but not for us. There are also some clichéd kind things which are changed for just for movie. The hero is always being projected in a big way. Lovable guy by all, Super intelligent in his own way, gardener’s son (to pull some sympathy), the finally he is shown rich just to tell that he wins the bet. Hero has to win always no??!!
But there are definitely some applaudable things in this film. First and foremost, Aamir Khan. 44 years and he is still acceptable as a 20 year old college boy with no qualms. His mischievous facial expressions fill the screen. The way he and Chaturamalingam define “Machine” and when he is told to get out of the class his definition of “book” is awesome. Next is the originality and realism in college scenes. Usually colleges in films are used for boy and girl to meet and love and it gets over with cafeteria and parking. Hardly classrooms will be shown, and even if it comes it would be shown in an artificial and foolish way. So applauds for not being the same. I am also forced to appreciate the unity of actors in Bollywood. They believe more in story than heroism.
So whatever it is, this film is must watch. One of the best film in the recent times. A stand apart from others. Hats off to Aamir Khan for his different acting.

The one man army at home
Pa is one person whose life has been nothing but sacrifices. He is one who sculpted me to whatever I am today. He has held my hands to teach me to walk and still continues to hold it. I should definitely illustrate certain examples here. When I first learnt to drive bike, he sat there at the back and kept instructing me. When I was about to about to put the bike down and fall, he just pushed me aside so that I wouldn’t get hurt the bike falls on him. That speaks of his concern. (But the tragedy is he still instructs and adjusts if i drive with him on the back ;())
Even when I sleep till 11 in the morning, he doesn’t wake me up and scolds mom not to wake up and says, Paavam let her sleep she can enjoy all this here only. He has taught me love, affection, sharing, discipline and everything but in a very sweet way. He loses his temper but it was for all our good. And the best part is, he loves his daughters so much that he cannot be without talking to us so comes back immediately consoling us. I would proudly say I am the pampered daughter of my father, the gift of being second and last in the family. But I am definitely not a spoilt brat. He is my first hero. I admire him a lot. Probably every girl on the earth expects a husband like her father only. She expects the same care, unconditioned love, his courage, his smiles during tough times. Wow… You are the best always…!!
I love the way he teases me. I am an ardent fan of actor Madhavan. So much so crazy that I watch any crap movie just because he comes. I would be watching alaipayuthey 105 or 106th time in the TV and he gets home from office. He would give me a smile like, “Nee thirundave maate kind”... He comes back and sternly says I want to watch news so give me the remote. So I would give it half heartedly.
And get back to my room. Suddenly I hear Pacchai Nerame song so loudly that I run to the hall to see it. My dad would be waiting for that moment and would immediately change the channel just to tease me. Though it would be irritating I like the way he does it. Pa, I love you so much. I do not even if I would be able to tell these words ever to you. But I wanted to tell the world how much I love you. I know you are not even aware of my blog or this post. But now the world knows that your daughter loves you so much and thanks you for everything.
I guess it has become too very sentimental. Now on the lighter side let us see some pathetic moments of my Pa. As I first said dad has always sacrificed everything. But I feel may be he was forced to. Because we were 3 women against him. And sometimes with my grandmother at home, it was a clear 4:1.He was the only man and had no choice. Every single day, he would have to listen to conversation about clothes, beauty accessories, matching nail polishes, shoes, recipes, stuff toys, Barbie dolls, handbags, sarees, salwars, did I say clothes?, Or the fights over the same dress with my sister. Sometimes about pakkathu aathu mami, or ethir veetu mami. Poor pa.He would just nod his head with a book in his hand and or utter a mere uummm to whatever we say because men are like that. I don’t know if he really understood our conversation. Or even doubt if he gave his full ears to listen to those gossips. All cupboards stuffed with girl clothes and girl stuff, shirt hanger used to hang handbags, office table spread with teddy bears instead of the paper work. All the papers he keeps for rough accounts use, being actually used for drawing rangoli or coloring some cartoons. Even the cupboard in the bathroom stuffed with face packs, moisturizer lotions. Hair bands hanging in the shower nozzle. Hair pins, safety pins, dupattas, tees scattered all around the house sometimes I even keep my favorite hair clips in his brief case without his knowledge so that it wouldn’t get lost in the mess. ;) Then my sister got married but these dupattas and hair bands never changed. Still we subject him to conversations on slim fit jeans, handbags, salwars, pink, Cinderella, Dora, etc etc with the only difference in the ratio being 5:1. That’s my little niece joining the bandwagon. Yeah, women are always like that only.
DAD YOU ARE THE BEST AND I JUST ADORE YOU SO MUCH. LOVE YOU PA.

Sivagamiyin Sabadham

Sivagamiyin sabatham (The vow of Sivagami) is one of the best written Tamil historical novel by Kalki in 1944. It is infact believed by some to be one of the first historical novels in Tamil. It was originally serialized in the weekly Kalki for about 12 years (Goodness.. 12years in a weekly magazine) which was later published as a novel. The story is set in 7th-century south India against the backdrop of various historical events and figures. Honour, love and friendship form important themes that run through the course of the novel. At the end of the book, I swear one would doubt if it was really an imaginative novel. It had been woven across so beautifully that you are forced to believe that it had actually happened.
First of all, I thank my friend who motivated me to read this book some few months back. After insisting so much I started to read this book, finally I read it in a full stretch of a week's time all the 4 parts. Kalki is such a classic writer that he forces you to emote along with the characters. I know people really don not find time to read such huge novels and appreciate its literary work. I am just a small time writer and cannot really review on such good books. But a small effort of appreciation on the master piece...!!
Some Pivotal Characters:
Mahendravarman
He is the father of the hero of our story. Kalki portrays him as a connoisseur of arts. He is also someone who was well versed in disguising. Kalki also portrays him as a compassionate king who was easily accessible and who sought and got advice from his courtiers. Though he gets converted from being follower of Jainism to Shaivism he remains tolerant of other religions and respects their practices. He dreams of a day when peace reigns and kings do not have to fight war with each other. But at the end just like any other villain father, he becomes the reason of the separation of his son’s love.
Narasimhavarman
Though he was outshone by Mahendravarman in the first half of the book, Narasimhavarman takes a life of his own later on. He is the prince who is head over heels in love with the dancer, Sivagami. His love for Sivagami even makes him promise her that he would even relinquish his throne if there was precondition for marrying her. After all that is LOVE. He is portrayed as an obedient son and more importantly someone who understands the practicality of a situation when he agrees to marry the Pandya princess to avoid any problems when he is planning is attack on the Chalukyas when he is forced to take over the kingdom.
Pulakesi
The Chalukya king, one of the villains in the novel, is portrayed as being ruthless and almost barbaric. Unlike his brother, Naganandhi, he does not have an inclination towards art and sees them as being a waste of time. He has deep respect towards his brother and mentor, Naganandhi. Kalki paints a clear contrast between Mahendravarman and Pulakesi. While the former's courtiers are shown as respecting the king for his wisdom and knowledge the latter's subjects fear his ruthlessness. While the Pallava king consults his ministers and acts on their advice the Chalukya king acts more on his instincts.
Naganandhi
The fictional twin brother of Pulakesi (Ya, if you browse a bit you would interestingly find there was no such character in history) would probably qualify as the main villain of the novel. He dons the role of a Buddhist monk and this provides him the license to move freely between the various kingdoms. He has an eye for the art and is also portrayed as a cunning statesman and spy. But his love for the beautiful Sivagami changes his life all together. But his love for Sivagami has more to do with her artistic abilities than her physical self. He uses the visual similarity that he has with Pulakesi to his advantage to save Ayanar and his lady love. Having spent his childhood and most of his youth in a Buddhist monastery under highly challenging circumstances he possesses a body that is immune to any poison. He dedicates his life to the well-being of the state and his brother. Though he is portrayed a negative character, we find a sympathy towards the end in his character because though he does everything for his love, he treats Sivagami alone with such dignity.
Sivagami
Our Heroine or rather the lady hero around whom the entire story revolves. The most bold beautiful and the mystical dancer who Mahendravarman claims can portray even those postures and nuances that the creator of Bharathanatyam had not thought of. Her dance is described to be of such beauty that the person who watches it sees the goddess itself in her. She is in love with Narasimhavarman. Being alone in the sculptor's settlement she only has a parrot and deer for her solace. Her fame had spread to distant lands. She is also portrayed as being selfless and generous. She is ready to undergo punishment for the sake of freeing the captured women from the Pallava Empire. And there starts her vow and the twist in the story. How she suffers in remembrance of the king and awaiting his arrival for freeing her??
Paranjothi
The able commander of the Pallava army, Paranjothi is portrayed as being a brave soldier. One of my favorite characters in the novel after Sivagami. Such a manly guy. His entry in the novel itself would be such heroic. After acquainting with the King, His Nobel service to the Kingdom becomes vital. He remains a history for valor, friendship, love and honor. The best part of him is when after the final brutal war how his mind changes and understands the importance of human life and finds solace as his new life. (To find out what his new life is, read the full book…!)
Ayanar
Sivagami's father and master sculptor is portrayed as someone who is fanatically in search of the secret behind the Ajanta dyes. He was so curious to know that secret that he was even ready to risk his life and escape from the Kanchi fort and wanted to talk with Pulakesi to get the information. His love for arts and sculptor are beautifully described.
Satrugnan, Gundodharan
The spies of the Pallava Empire. They are portrayed as being extremely capable and have a very good sense of humour. They add the spice of humor in right propositions.
Vanama Devi:
The princess of the Pandya kingdom and later becomes the wife of the great king Narasimhavarman. She is portrayed so beautifully but you just cannot avoid her innocence and her true love for the king in spite of knowing his history.
Kamali:
The best friend of Sivagami and Wife of Kannabiraan. Portrays beautifully the meaning of friendship, the pain when sivagami is in danger. One of the stand out characters in the book.
Therotti kannabiraan:
His respect and obiedence for the royal family. His valour when it comes to war and how he sacrifices his life for the country. He is known for his humour and fun filled nature.
Apart from these there are few other characters but these are only the highlights of it.
Plot:
It would be tough to point out who the real hero of the novel is. Mahendravarman I, the Pallava emperor plays an important role in the first half of the story while his son Narasimhavarman comes into his own as the novel progresses. But according to me the real hero will our Sivagami and vow. The plot revolves around the vow which she takes and how and when that was completed. The story itself is divided into four parts
Part 1: Paranjothi's Journey
Part 2: The Siege of Kanchi
Part 3: The Monk's Love
Part 4: The Shattered Dream
The plot is simple but it is weaved around extraordinarily. You cry with them, laugh out, flirt with the love, and express the angers, the revenge and all other emotions. Probably I feel that is the success of the book. I enjoyed it hope everyone who reads it will love the language and the novel.
